Not too far from Downtown, lies a suburban-like neighborhood with an urban edge, Highland Park – attracting all generations, young and old. Move over Silverlake and Echo Park, there’s a new destination to call home and helping with the migration has been the Metro Rail Gold Line which easily connects commuters to the rest of the city and beyond. Investors and house flippers have also taken an interest in restoring, renovating and add/or adding their own unique signature styles to the various mid century modern and California bungalows that blanket the hills. As one of Los Angeles’ oldest neighborhoods, Highland Park defies the signs of aging. Murals and street art cover its facades. Its main drag, York Boulevard, is lined with attractive eateries, spacious art galleries and quirky shops. You’re more likely to encounter shops owned by moms and pops than big-name retail chains. The Garvanza section of Highland Park served as a hub of the local arts and craftsman movement. Garvanza was officially designated as a neighborhood by the City of Los Angeles in 1997, and the entire area was earmarked as a Historical Preservation Overlay Zone in April 2007. The rest, as they say, is history.
